In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), depression is not a disease. The cause of such symptoms is due to some sort of emotional discomfort and Qi (energy) stagnation cited as diseases in general.

To TCM’s etiology, emotional discomfort is mainly due to the poor condition of the heart, liver, and spleen, and dysfunctional blood circulation.

TCM classifies depression into two categories: circulatory and organ dysfunction. Healthy lifestyle changes that enhance confidence and improve quality of life are vitally important, for example, daily life routines, regular healthy meals, exercise, time for leisure, avoiding too much time indoors or isolation, and, ideally, avoiding alcohol and smoking.

Spiritual healing is also essential for the treatment of depression, which involves the cultivation of patience by, for example, following a meditation system instead of relying on external means, such as drug treatment.
