Hope and Loss: The Kurdish Defense of Kobani (Video)

After nearly three months, the battle for the city of Kobani in northern Syria continues. On one side are the Kurds; on the other are the attacking extremists from ISIS.

The footage above was taken by video journalist Jacob Simkin for AP and through the nearly three minutes long video published by the Wall Street Journal we meet some of the 2000 Kurdish civilians and fighters (men and women) who’ve remained behind in the besieged city.

Kids hiding in foxholes and families who’ve lost nearly everything are some of the people featured in Simkin’s footage.

Makes sure you watch to the end where Simkin films the moment when a:

Kurdish father reunites with his 19-year-old daughter on the front-line.
