The year 2015 is the Year of the Sheep… the Green Sheep

Well, it’s the Chinese Year of the Sheep; you may also see it referred to as the Year of the Goat or Ram. In Chinese, they use the same general term, yáng, for these animals.

It is also the Year of the Green, or to be more precise, Wooden Sheep. So what does it mean?

Well, each of the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac has unique characteristics, and each year corresponds to one animal.

Animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac explained:

With the 12-year cycle corresponding to each of the animals in the Chinese Zodiac, there are also Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) that are associated with their own “life force” or “chi“.

The Chinese Five Elements (五行 wǔxíng):

This energy and corresponding animal will determine that year’s fortune.

In 2015, the corresponding element is Wood.

Wood relates to trees, which then relates to the color green. The Year of the Wooden Sheep is therefore also known as the Year of the Green Sheep.

What will Wood and Sheep mixed together bring?

The Sheep is kind, tender and sympathetic. Sheep are creative and elegant. Because of their softer side, they are symbolic of peace and harmony. Combined with the evergreen and renewal characteristics of Wood, the Sheep’s creativity will be unleashed.

This year will be the year for contemplating and appreciating what has been accomplished, to think about bringing goodness to others, to take a deep breath and calmly look at what’s ahead.

Babies born in the Year of the Sheep

If your baby is born in the Year of the Sheep, he or she will assume the characteristics of the Sheep: Sheep are kind, elegant, creative, and loyal. Empathy comes natural to sheep; their happiness is derived from other people’s happiness.

Sheep will avoid confrontation and are not born leaders. However, the Sheep is the 8th sign of the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Eight is the lucky number for the Chinese and being born under the 8th sign is a good thing. Who wouldn’t want their child to be kind, forgiving and loyal? Sheep babies are good-hearted, and will always look after everyone else first.

The next Year of the Green Sheep won’t be for another 60 years.
