Something I have always wanted to figure out, but never could, is how many hours of sleep we actually need. How do we decide what’s long enough? And why do we sleep 1/3 of our lives away?

It’s true that we benefit from a routine; we choose a time to go to bed, and have to get up to go to work, do housework, or study.

So what determines how many hours we should sleep?

Is there a way we can measure it?

This infographic reveals some of the strange sleeping habits of the world’s most successful people, and most are below the recommended levels of shut eye.

The National Sleep foundation recommends 7 to 9 hours sleep a night for 18- to 64-year-olds to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Their study also linked interrupted sleep patterns with compromised cognitive ability, shorter attention span, and negative moods.

Mmm… Ok, ok, I still don’t know how many hours of sleep is best for me. I guess we can resort to ancient Chinese wisdom, which says that taking the middle way is a good approach.
