A wonderful design by a Turkish company received many “likes” and enthusiasm for its creative and kind idea back in July 2014. It is a special vending machine that takes bottles deposited for recycling and dispenses food for the city’s stray dogs. How great is this? It is not only environmentally friendly, but also helps the poor animals.
One year later, Beijing has introduced this vending machine to the city. For every recyclable can or bottle you feed into the vending machine, about 0.7 ounces of free food will pop out into the feeding bowl.
Isn’t this supposed to be a nice offering for the city? The sad truth is many Internet users are actually skeptical. They shared their concerns that this good design will probably be turned into something negative by the bad people in the city.
One Weibo user wrote: “I bet many people will take their pets for free food.” This comment got over 600 “thumbs up” (on Weibo, people use thumbs up to agree). Another one added: “I’m picturing all the grandmas walking their dogs will soon be fighting each other to get the dog food.” Also, 600 thumbs up.
One Internet user wrote: “These concerns might well come true in China. I’m more worried that some mentally ill people will put poison in the food bowl to kill those little animals.” 650 thumbs up.
Another Internet user wrote: “The vending machine will soon become the new supplier of the dog food sellers, the new channel to get some free dog food for the pet keepers, and the new hunting spot for people running an illegal business on cats and dogs.” 300 thumbs up.
The sad conclusion is:
It is a clever and kind design, but it doesn’t fit the people in China who do all kinds of crazy and bad things.
