Fu Zhiqin, a 30-year-old female doctor at the Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, has been receiving media interviews lately. As a child, Fu loved drawing and would sketch from animation books, protagonists from TV series, and from other drawings and posters. She did not expect that her talent and creativity in drawing could be used in her work as a medical doctor.
Hand-drawn illustration of the duodenal anatomy
During Fu’s posting in the gastroenterology department, she helped a colleague complete a medical paper by drawing a suitable illustration of the duodenal anatomy. In China, the standard of a medical paper produced by a doctor is critical to their promotion and salary increment.
Fu took 2 hours to draw the illustration. She used different colored markers to highlight the duodenum, pancreas, liver, bile duct, blood vessels, and other organs. The drawing is vivid and achieved the colleague’s required objective, unlike photos, which would have shown the organs filled with tissues and blood.
Fu’s colleague was overjoyed and immediately snapped a photo and shared it on social media. This hand-drawn illustration of “duodenal anatomy” was Fu Zhiqin’s first piece of work to go viral
Talented doctor began to draw for medical referrals
In the gynecological department, Fu helped her director, Chen Lu, prepare a drawing to illustrate a mass of growth inside the seriously deformed uterus of a patient. Chen Lu performed a diagnosis on the patient and thought it was best to recommend a surgical operation to remove the uterus completely.
Chen knew that he needed a vivid illustration to communicate with the patient and her family instead of using pictures that would not be acceptable to ordinary people. This illustration was not only used by Chen, but also by other gynecologists for doctors’ training.
From now onward, Fu not only has the chance to realize her childhood dream to take up drawing, but also to carve out her future plan to play a professional role in preparing hand-drawn illustrations of human anatomy for various medical cases.
