It is often said that laughter is the best medicine. And to an extent, it is true that indulging in fun activities every day will help in dealing with the pressures of life. However, many people seem to be so devoted to their work in this modern world that they forget the importance of laughter and its many benefits.

Healthy benefits of laughing

What is probably the biggest benefit of laughing is that it helps in relieving stress, something many people sorely need in their busy lives. In a 2008 study, it was found that laughter is capable of reducing the levels of stress hormones by a large amount.

The subjects who participated saw the level of cortisol drop by 39 percent, dopac (a dopamine catabolite) by 38 percent, and epinephrine dropped by a massive 70 percent just from anticipating laughter. “Our findings lead us to believe that by seeking out positive experiences that make us laugh we can do a lot with our physiology to stay well,” Science Daily quotes Dr. Lee Berk, the lead researcher of the study.

For people suffering from blood pressure problems, laughter is a fun way to keep it in check. A study, that looked at how comedy shows affected blood pressure of the audience, saw a beneficial relationship between them.

“Arterial compliance was improved for a full 24 hours after subjects watched a funny movie. Laughing is likely not the complete solution to a healthy heart, but it appears to contribute to positive effects,” Medical News Today quotes researcher Jun Sugawara.

However, people who watched depressing subjects ended up constricting their blood vessels by around 18 percent as per another study. This just goes on to highlight how important it is to keep away from negative situations and keep the mind in a positive frame.

The body’s immune system can also be boosted by laughter. When stressed out, the immune system response becomes lower. However, in a humorous mood, the levels of immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies surge.

Watching a comedy show has also been shown to positively affect brain function, making people smarter. An experiment discovered that people who watched comedy shows performed well in semantic tasks when compared to those who did not watch any funny shows.

Cheer up and laugh

Given that laughing has such incredible health benefits, you might be thinking that you should laugh as much as possible every day. And the best way to start doing so is to embrace your laughter. Many people tend to suppress themselves while in a group. Try not to hold back next time and laugh to your heart’s content.

There are excellent comedy shows on TV. Be a regular viewer and you will find yourself laughing for a few minutes every day. If you lead a busy life, try using streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. You should also hang out with people who have a great sense of humor. Their outlook will rub off on you and keep you in a happy mood all day long.

So, try to indulge in some humorous, fun activities from now on. And over a few weeks, you will definitely feel that your outlook toward life has changed, your mind is more open to new ideas, and that you are able to deal with stress more effectively. While browsing online, visit the jokes section now and then for a laugh in between work.
