Nearly two months after the shocking death of Chinese actor Yu Menglong, fans continue to grapple with unanswered questions surrounding his demise. New footage from one of Yu’s final livestreams has resurfaced online, with netizens now saying he was pleading for help.

Yu died after mysteriously falling from a high-rise building in Beijing on Sept. 11. Authorities closed the case within 24 hours, ruling it an “accidental fall” following a “night of heavy drinking.” But a growing number of industry peers, fans, and human rights’ advocates have called for an independent investigation, citing the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and the government’s swift suppression of anyone who speaks about about the case.

In the clip, the 37-year-old actor, who’s also known as Alan Yu, can be heard saying with a nervous smile: “I think I was tricked by my friend… Fulì came to save me. I’m scared.” At the time, most viewers thought Yu was joking. But now, the moment has taken on chilling new meaning.

A cry for help?

Across Chinese social media, fans have flooded comment sections in grief: “He was clearly hinting at something,” said one netizen. “We just didn’t understand.”

The livestream, which was first viewed as cheerful and lighthearted, has since become the center of an online storm. Yu’s remark, “Fulì smelled something strange,” was initially brushed off as a random comment about his pet dog. Yet, as fans rewatch the footage, many say it feels like a coded message from someone living under immense fear and pressure.

“That sentence feels too real, too terrifying,” one viewer wrote. “It’s like he was voicing the fear trapped in his heart.” The incident has reignited doubts over the official explanation that Yu’s death was merely “an accidental fall.” Many now believe his final broadcast could contain hidden clues.

Within China’s entertainment industry, Yu was widely admired as a “gentle” and “warm-hearted gentleman.” He was devoted to his family and his two beloved dogs — a corgi named Fulì (meaning “happiness and beauty”) and a French bulldog named Huǒtuǐ (“Ham”).

“My phone is basically full of their photos,” Yu once said in an interview. He would also often bring his furry pals to film sets and even featured them in magazine shoots. Fans joked that “Fulì and Huǒtuǐ were his family.” That image of warmth and kindness now clashes painfully with the mystery surrounding his death.

A heart-wrenching farewell

Adding to the sorrow, a new audio clip circulating online allegedly captures Yu’s trembling voice saying: “Fulì… Huǒtuǐ… we’ll never be together again…”

The authenticity of the recording has not been verified, but it has fueled fears that his beloved pets may have met a tragic fate as well. Others speculate it may have been a misinterpreted or edited clip. As of now, authorities have issued no official comment, leaving the truth shrouded in uncertainty.

“He loved his dogs so much,” one fan wrote. “A man that gentle, who couldn’t even harm an animal — how could he suddenly be gone?”

Friends and colleagues describe Yu as loyal, genuine, and compassionate — someone who always cared deeply for his mother, his pets, and his friends. His sudden death, they say, leaves behind too many unanswered questions.

Fans determined to seek justice for Yu

What began as an online outpouring of grief has evolved into one of the largest grassroots justice campaigns in China’s digital age. Across platforms like YouTube, X, and Instagram, tens of thousands of tribute videos have surfaced, reconstructing timelines and demanding accountability. Even in New York’s Times Square, digital billboards were displaying tributes of Yu by playing silent images of the actor.
