If you forgot to buy champagne or suddenly need some party supplies to welcome 2026, it’s best to check the business hours of local stores before heading out.

Overall, most retail chains will operate normally on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31, though many stores may close earlier than usual. The situation is similar for restaurants and grocery stores. If you plan to start 2026 with some shopping on New Year’s Day, January 1, most retail stores will remain open.

Stores open on New Year’s Eve but closed on New Year’s Day

  • Ace Hardware – Most stores open on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day. Check the website for specific hours.
  • Aldi – Closes at 7 PM on New Year’s Eve; closed all day January 1.
  • Costco – New Year’s Eve hours: 10 AM–6 PM; closed January 1.
  • Kroger Pharmacies – Stores open both days, but pharmacies close early on New Year’s Eve and all day January 1. Check online for details.
  • Sam’s Club – Open on New Year’s Eve, closed January 1.
  • Trader Joe’s – Closes early on New Year’s Eve, usually 5 PM, and closed January 1. Hours on the website.

Whether shopping on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, it’s best to check the specific hours of your target store and its internal services. Most stores will resume normal hours by Friday, Jan. 2.
