On Jan. 12, 2026, Fox News reported that U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem publicly defended federal law enforcement officers on Sunday, Jan. 11, pushing back against Democratic politicians’ attacks over an ICE shooting incident in Minneapolis and responding to an impeachment motion introduced by a Democratic congresswoman from Illinois.
On Fox News’ program Sunday Morning Futures, Noem said that ICE and other federal law enforcement officers operate daily in high-risk environments, relying on rigorous training and professional judgment to make decisions. She emphasized that these officers have sworn an oath to the nation and, in critical situations, protect the safety of the public and their colleagues, and therefore deserve the trust and support of American society.
Regarding the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during a law enforcement operation, Noem stated that the ICE officers involved acted in self-defense when facing a real threat. Federal authorities said that when officers attempted to remove Good from her vehicle, she drove the SUV forward, creating a direct threat to the officers’ lives.
According to CNBC, Noem repeatedly stressed that the incident meets the definition of “domestic terrorist behavior,” and that ICE officers lawfully used force in order to protect themselves, fellow officers, and the public. Although the investigation is ongoing, the federal government has made clear it will firmly support officers performing their lawful duties.

Impeachment threat, local pushback, and federal reinforcements
Meanwhile, Fox News reported that Illinois Democratic Representative Robin Kelly announced plans to pursue impeachment against Noem, accusing her of obstructing justice and abusing power. Noem and officials in the Trump administration countered that these accusations essentially politicize a law-enforcement incident and are intended to weaken the federal immigration enforcement system.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz publicly criticized ICE operations, prompting a strong response from Noem. She referred to Governor Walz and his political situation, arguing that local political leaders are attempting to divert attention from more serious issues in the state, such as fraud involving social services. She said that the aggressive rhetoric of local Democratic officials fuels confrontation with federal law enforcement and increases risks for frontline officers.
CNBC also reported that Noem has ordered hundreds of additional federal law enforcement officers to be sent to Minneapolis to ensure that ICE and border enforcement personnel can safely and continuously carry out federal law. Tom Homan, the White House border security chief, called on all parties to allow the investigation to proceed according to law, while reiterating the necessity of ICE in safeguarding public safety and the rule of law.
