On Jan. 28, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), acting under a court-issued search warrant, carried out a law enforcement operation at the main elections office of Fulton County, Georgia, seizing multiple sets of materials related to the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The operation was formally authorized by a federal court and is part of an ongoing investigation. The search took place at a facility in Union City, south of Atlanta, which serves as Fulton County’s centralized operations center for election administration. An FBI spokesperson confirmed that agents were executing a court-authorized law enforcement action but declined to provide further details about the investigation.

Details of the search

According to reports from the scene, FBI agents established a secured perimeter outside the election facility and were seen removing multiple boxes of documents and items from the warehouse-style building and loading them into law enforcement vehicles. Agents reportedly remained on site for several hours before concluding the operation.

Fulton County officials later issued a statement saying the search warrant primarily targeted records and materials related to the 2020 presidential election, and confirmed that the county government is cooperating with the federal investigation in accordance with the law.

The FBI has not disclosed whether any individuals are targets of the investigation, nor has it announced whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Scope of materials seized

According to reports, the materials sought by investigators include:

  • Physical ballots used in the 2020 presidential election
  • Vote tabulation records generated by ballot-scanning equipment
  • Electronic ballot image files
  • Voter rolls and related system data

These materials are all connected to the voting, tabulation, and record-keeping procedures of the 2020 election.

Fulton County’s key role

Fulton County is the most populous county in Georgia and recorded the highest number of votes in the state during the 2020 presidential election. Its election results played a significant role in the state’s final vote count.

Since the conclusion of the 2020 election, the county has remained a focal point of disputes and controversies surrounding election procedures, vote counting, and election administration.

U.S. President Donald Trump has long focused on election operations in Fulton County and has repeatedly claimed that serious problems occurred there during the 2020 election, calling for a comprehensive review of the relevant election records.

Actions by the US Department of Justice

Prior to this search, the U.S. Department of Justice had filed a civil lawsuit against the Fulton County Clerk of Court’s office seeking lawful access to election records related to the 2020 election.

In its filing, the Justice Department stated that the purpose was to verify whether Georgia complied with federal election laws and to assist the state election board in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities under state law.

The DOJ said the requested materials—including ballots, envelopes, stubs, and electronic records—fall within the category of election records permitted for review under federal law.

Background of state election board investigations

In recent years, the Georgia State Election Board has made multiple attempts to reexamine Fulton County’s management of the 2020 election. The board previously issued formal subpoenas to the county requesting complete election records, but legal disputes arose over access rights and the sealing of certain materials.

Because some documents are sealed under state law, related disputes are still pending in the courts.

Official responses

As of now, neither the FBI nor the U.S. Department of Justice has disclosed the final investigative purpose of the search, nor whether the scope of the investigation will be expanded.

Fulton County officials said the county will follow legal procedures and continue to cooperate with all lawful investigative requests.

The search has renewed widespread attention on investigations related to the 2020 presidential election. The authentication, review, and subsequent legal proceedings involving the seized materials remain subject to further disclosure by the federal judicial system. At present, no individuals have been formally charged, and the results of the investigation have not been made public.
