World War II didn’t just reshape global politics. It also produced innovations that still shape everyday life, from medicine to fashion.
One of the most practical innovations was the jerry can, a fuel container developed in Germany in the 1930s. Designed for military use, the 20-liter steel container featured a robust rectangular shape and a distinctive three-handle system that made it easier to carry and pour without additional tools or funnels.
The design proved highly effective during the war, particularly for fueling heavy equipment such as Germany’s Tiger tanks. Its durability and ease of use quickly drew attention from Allied forces, which began producing their own versions. Today, variations of the jerry can are still widely used worldwide for transporting fuel and water, often made from steel, aluminum, or plastic depending on the application.
Another transformative development was penicillin, the world’s first widely used antibiotic. Discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming, a bacteriologist at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, penicillin’s potential was later realized by a team at the University of Oxford led by Howard Florey, Ernst Chain, and Norman Heatley.
Early production was extremely limited, with laboratories able to produce only enough for a single patient per month. Scaling up manufacturing became a critical challenge during the war, as infected wounds posed a major threat to soldiers.

A breakthrough came when American researchers developed a corn-based fermentation process that significantly increased yields. Mary Hunt, a laboratory assistant in Illinois, identified a strain of mold on a cantaloupe that produced far higher quantities of penicillin. Subsequent research, including mutation techniques using ultraviolet light at the University of Wisconsin, further boosted production levels. By 1945, mass production had reached hundreds of billions of units, making penicillin widely available and saving countless lives.
The third invention, nylon stockings, had a very different kind of impact. Developed in 1935 by Wallace Carothers and his team at DuPont, nylon was the first fully synthetic fiber and quickly became a major textile innovation.
Nylon’s original use was for parachutes, but it soon became a popular consumer item.
Nylon stockings were introduced to the public in 1939 and immediately generated intense demand. Their combination of strength, elasticity, and fine texture made them both practical and visually appealing. At the time, they were described as “as fine as spider silk, as strong as steel, and as beautiful as silk.”
When DuPont released nylon stockings for sale in May 1940, 72,000 pairs sold out in a single day in the United States. The product became a cultural sensation, with many women unable to purchase them resorting to drawing lines on their legs to imitate the look of stockings.
The popularity of nylon stockings marked a turning point in fashion, establishing sheer hosiery as a staple of women’s wardrobes. Decades later, nylon remains a fundamental material in textiles, used in everything from clothing to various industrial applications.
