Performances by Shen Yun Performing Arts across Canada from March 12 to April 12 have drawn strong responses from Chinese audience members, many of whom described the experience as both artistically impressive and emotionally resonant. Founded in 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, showcasing the beauty and splendor of traditional Chinese culture and art prior to the ravages of communism.
Touring cities in eastern Canada as well as Vancouver, Shen Yun once again generated significant interest, with some Chinese attendees traveling in groups to watch the performances. Audience members interviewed praised the company’s classical Chinese dance, live orchestra, and dynamic digital backdrop, while highlighting the deeper cultural and spiritual themes conveyed on stage.

Many said the performance offered a rare opportunity to experience what they described as authentic traditional Chinese culture, something they felt is difficult to access in mainland China today.
‘5,000 years of civilization’
During Shen Yun’s six-show run at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre from April 8 to 12, Chinese audience members joined a largely Western crowd in attending the performances.

Liu Jiayong, a member of the Chinese Democracy Party’s Vancouver chapter, said he was struck by the dancers’ technical skill. “The movements are astonishing, almost like something you’d see in film,” he said. He added that the performance conveyed universal values rooted in Chinese tradition, including compassion and respect for others. Reflecting on one dance drama, he said: “I realized people should exercise restraint and maintain reverence.”
Hao Dan, chairman of the Federation for a Democratic China in Canada, described Shen Yun’s role in preserving classical Chinese culture abroad as historically significant. He said the performance promotes values such as kindness and moral integrity, which he believes are especially meaningful in today’s world.
Song Yunkai, also based in Vancouver, commented on the production’s visual creativity. “It’s very impressive. The performers move seamlessly in and out of the digital backdrop,” he said. He added that the show highlights “many beautiful aspects of traditional Chinese culture.”
Zhang Baohui described the experience as “incredibly moving,” noting that Shen Yun presents “the essence of 5,000 years of civilization through dance and art.” She said certain story-based performances, including those rooted in classical Chinese legends, stood out as highlights.
Cultural reflection
Several audience members said specific scenes left a strong emotional impression. Fang Meihua described the production as a “grand visual feast,” praising the combination of choreography, music, and stage design. She said one scene depicting persecution brought her to tears, reflecting the emotional depth of the performance.
Zeng Yuanyi, attending Shen Yun for the first time, said the show prompted reflection on her own cultural experiences. “Here I saw what feels like genuine traditional culture,” she said. “It’s something difficult to experience back in China.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the performance rekindled a sense of cultural identity and connection.
Toronto performances disrupted
In Toronto, Shen Yun’s performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts initially drew full audiences on March 28. However, subsequent shows were canceled following a reported threat received by the theater. Audience members who had attended earlier performances expressed disappointment over the cancellations, while also voicing support for the company.
Zhou Xi said she was particularly impressed by the integration of the live orchestra and digital stage effects. She highlighted one story depicting renewal and transformation, saying it evoked a sense of simplicity and moral clarity.
Hanly, attending for the first time, pointed to three elements that stood out: the live orchestra, the seamless interaction between performers and digital backdrop, and the moral lessons conveyed through traditional stories. “Having faith helps people live better and be true to themselves,” she said.
Former Hong Kong actor and singer Cheng Jingji described the performance as “stunningly beautiful,” praising both the choreography and the emotional depth of the production. He said the show goes beyond dance, offering insight into deeper questions about life and culture.
Shared aspirations
Across both Vancouver and Toronto, Chinese audience members expressed a shared desire to see traditional cultural values preserved and more widely experienced. Several interviewees highlighted the importance of values such as truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, describing them as essential to both personal conduct and social harmony.
Some also noted that the growing global popularity of Shen Yun reflects increasing international interest in traditional Chinese culture. At the same time, audience members expressed hope that such performances could one day be staged in mainland China, allowing broader access to what they see as an important cultural heritage.
As one attendee put it, attending Shen Yun is not only an artistic experience, but also a way to reconnect with cultural roots and reflect on enduring values.
