If you’ve never seen a Chinese doctor before, don’t be scared, traditional Chinese medicine is not voodoo. It’s been around for thousands of years and is a valid way of treating and preventing all types of health problems, including mental health issues such as depression.
A doctor of Chinese medicine will focus on prevention and tries to harmonize the body towards full-health. A Western doctor treats a physical or mental health problem after it has already made an appearance, then they may offer some advice to prevent it re-occurring.
When you visit a Chinese doctor, he or she will check your overall health by using three senses:
- SIGHT: reading your face by observing the color of your face and tongue.
- SMELL: noting the odor of your body and breath.
- FEEL: sensing the rhythm and strength of your pulse.
The Chinese doctor will then ask about your diet to assess if there is an imbalance that needs to be addressed, as food, like anything needs to be in harmony with the body.
These ways of diagnosis reveal a lot about your health to a trained Chinese doctor.
