How an Enormous Hole Became a Spectacular Tourist Attraction

In China’s Three Kingdoms period, supposedly in the year 263, an enormous hole suddenly opened through solid rock in Tianmen Mountain, in northwest of China. Through the hole you could see the endless sky towards heaven above earth.

It was quickly reported to the lord of that kingdom, Xiu Sun, who believed it was a good omen from the gods. He named the place: Caves of Heavenly Gate.

Today the Gate still remains, and what a sight! Tourists travel from all over China and the world to see the Heavenly Gate.

At the foot of the Gate is a monument with the words in Chinese: Sacred Tianmen.
