The picture shows a old lady squatting next to a young lady in a filled bus. One would think that moral conscience might suggest that one should make space for older people. Many commenters say that what happened in the this bus is an unfortunate moral representation of people in China today.

An article from Secret China explains the story behind the picture.

An old woman, standing in the bus, was swaying from side to side as the bus traveled. Occasionally, she would softly bump into the young girl from the city, as the bus swayed from side to side.

The young girl remained seated and did not offer the old lady her seat. In addition the young girl said to the old lady: “So dirty, stay away from me. By taking one look at you, I can see you are from the village. So, stay away from me.”

The older lady then squatted, holding on to the edge of the young girls seat throughout the ride.

The article further included a request:

” People with conscience, please forward this photo and let more people become aware of what is happening in our [Chinese] society.”
