Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed on Tuesday, March 31 that a senior officer was killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike. The deceased was Jamshid Eshaghi, Brigadier General and head of budget and financial affairs at the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces.

According to NDTV, the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces is a key military body coordinating between the regular army and the Revolutionary Guards, holding a critical position within Iran’s military-political system. On the same day, IRGC commander Ahmad Vahidi issued a statement mourning Eshaghi’s death, noting that he was killed along with several family members in the U.S.-Israeli strike, though no specific time or further details were disclosed.

Meanwhile, the U.S. had previously sanctioned Eshaghi. In February 2025, the U.S. Treasury Department added him to its sanctions list, accusing him of participating in an “international oil transport network” that helped ship millions of barrels of Iranian crude to China, involving hundreds of millions of dollars.

The U.S. claimed the network operated through overseas shell companies and intermediaries to conceal the Iranian origin of the oil. Eshaghi had served at Sepehr Energy and collaborated with the IRGC to sell crude to the Chinese market.

The U.S. also said that these oil revenues were used to fund Iran-backed regional armed groups, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Eshaghi is the latest senior official confirmed dead by Iranian authorities in this round of conflict. Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed on Feb. 28, the first day of the war; earlier this month, prominent political and security figure Ali Larijani was also killed, along with more than a dozen other key figures.

Israel and the U.S. stated that targeted strikes on Iran’s senior leadership have significantly impacted the country’s military and political systems.
