Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) places great emphasis on winter wellness. The Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor) states:

“Fail to preserve vital energy in winter, and you will fall ill in spring.”

But what does this actually mean, and why is it important for health?

What is ‘preserving vital energy’ (Cang Jing)?

The concept of cang jing is broad, but it primarily refers to kidney essence (shen jing). In TCM, the kidneys are considered the foundation of innate vitality, and kidney essence is regarded as the core of life itself — the “essence you are born with.”

To preserve vital energy means protecting this essence. Doing so supports overall health and helps prevent disease, especially during seasonal transitions from winter to spring.

Winter is the time to preserve vital energy

Winter is considered the optimal season for preserving vital energy. As the seasons shift — cold follows heat, and autumn harvests are stored in winter — nature itself enters a period of conservation and storage. Observing this natural rhythm is a key principle of winter wellness.

What is a ‘warm disease’ (Wen Bing)?

A “warm disease” refers to physical discomforts or ailments, such as inflammation or feverish conditions, that make the body more prone to illness.

The saying means that if one neglects to protect vital energy during winter, one is more likely to fall ill in the spring. People with weaker constitutions may even experience a recurrence of old illnesses during this period.

Why might kidney essence become deficient?

1. Age

For older adults, kidney essence naturally declines as part of the aging process. As bodily functions weaken, kidney energy (shen qi) can become insufficient, especially if pre-existing health conditions are present.

2. Unhealthy habits

Certain lifestyle choices can accelerate depletion, particularly among young people. Examples include staying up late, indiscriminate use of medication, excessive exercise leading to heavy sweating, chronic stress or worry, and overindulgence in sexual activity. These habits can all contribute to a deficiency of kidney essence.

Signs of kidney essence deficiency

When kidney essence is insufficient, it can affect various aspects of health:

  • Brain and cognition: The brain may not receive adequate nourishment, leading to memory decline and impaired thinking.
  • Hearing: In TCM, the kidneys “open to the ears.” Deficient kidney essence can result in reduced nourishment to the ears, causing hearing loss.
  • Other physical signs: For men, this may manifest as lower back discomfort; for women, it can lead to irregular menstruation.

By checking for these signs, individuals can identify potential deficiencies early. Winter is the ideal season to preserve kidney essence and practice proper health maintenance, ensuring vitality and well-being in the months ahead.
