According to Chattanooga Times Free Press, on July 16, just days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Spain’s national team arrived at its training base in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where enthusiastic fans had already packed the area.

As the team bus slowly pulled up outside the hotel, hundreds of supporters waving Spanish flags and team jerseys cheered loudly from behind the barriers. But it was 19-year-old Lamine Yamal who truly sent the crowd into a frenzy. As fans chanted “Lamine! Lamine!” in unison, the young Spanish star removed his cap and waved before entering the hotel, while the cheering continued unabated.

“There were about 1,500 people there, and I’d say at least 1,000 were wearing Yamal jerseys,” recalled Bill Nuttall, the former U.S. men’s national team general manager who helped bring Spain’s World Cup training base to Chattanooga. “The moment he stepped off the bus, the roar sounded like a jet engine.”

From the streets of Rocafonda to football’s brightest young star

Lamine Yamal was born in Mataró, Catalonia, Spain. His father is Moroccan, and his mother is from Equatorial Guinea. He grew up in Rocafonda, a working-class neighborhood known for its large North African immigrant population and long described by Spanish media as a “forgotten” and “marginalized” community.

Without modern training facilities, Yamal first developed his remarkable skills on concrete football pitches. By the age of four, he had already displayed extraordinary talent and was accepted into the local club La Torreta free of charge.

Rafa Rodríguez Muñoz, president of La Torreta, recalled: “From the very first day, he was the most special kid among them all. His speed, dribbling, and understanding of the game were clearly superior to everyone else’s.”

In 2014, Barcelona scout Isidre Gil watched the seven-year-old Yamal play and immediately urged the club to sign him as a priority. Local rival Espanyol was also pursuing the youngster, but Barcelona ultimately secured his signature first.

Goal reported that on the day of his Barcelona trial, Yamal even forgot to bring his cleats and had to borrow a pair from someone else. Even so, he impressed the coaching staff enough to earn a place in the academy.

Lamine Yamal becomes Europe’s champion and Spain’s World Cup star

After joining Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Yamal progressed through every youth level at remarkable speed.

On April 29, 2023, at just 15 years, 9 months, and 16 days old, he made his first-team debut for Barcelona, setting a modern club record. Later that September, he became the youngest player ever to appear for—and score for—the Spanish national team.

During UEFA Euro 2024, Yamal helped Spain win the championship and quickly established himself as a key player for the national team. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick once said, “I believe he will become one of the greatest footballers in history.”

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente also remarked, “Yamal is the kind of player who seems to have been blessed by God.”

The Associated Press noted that as the World Cup has progressed, Yamal has become not only the centerpiece of Spain’s attack but also one of the tournament’s most commercially valuable young athletes. He has signed endorsement deals with Adidas, Powerade, American Eagle, and McDonald’s. His Instagram following has surpassed 43.5 million, exceeding the combined total of Japanese baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani, NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and tennis legend Roger Federer.

A photograph that connected two generations of legends

Yamal is often compared with Lionel Messi not only because both came through La Masia and share exceptional left-footed dribbling ability, but also because of a famous photograph that has captivated football fans around the world.

In 2007, the 20-year-old Messi took part in a charity calendar photo shoot organized by Barcelona and UNICEF. A young couple who had won a raffle brought along their three-month-old baby to participate in the session.

In one of the photos, Messi is carefully bathing the infant. That baby was Lamine Yamal.

Two years ago, Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared the photo on social media with the caption: “The beginning of two legends” (“El comienzo de dos leyendas”). The image quickly went viral and has since become one of football’s most iconic photographs.

Nearly two decades later, the baby in that picture has become Spain’s centerpiece, while Messi continues to lead Argentina onto the stage of another World Cup final.

World Cup final: A new era challenges the old

Throughout this World Cup, Yamal’s popularity has swept across the United States. Reuters reported that Spain’s public training session in Chattanooga offered just 1,000 tickets, yet more than 20,000 people entered the lottery for a chance to attend.

After the session, a 12-year-old American girl was lucky enough to have Yamal pick up her phone and take a selfie with her. Excited, she told her family, “Everyone says he’s amazing. I sent the photo to my friends, and they couldn’t believe it.”

For the football world, however, the greatest anticipation centers on this Sunday’s World Cup final.

On one side stands Lionel Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup champion.

On the other is 19-year-old Lamine Yamal, widely regarded as Messi’s heir apparent.

From being “the baby once held by Messi” to facing his idol on football’s biggest stage in the World Cup final, Yamal’s journey has become one of the tournament’s most remarkable and legendary stories.
